Section 02

Reacquire Danish citizenship - who was covered and what happens now.

The scheme for reacquiring Danish citizenship closed on 30 June 2026, and new requests can no longer be submitted. If you filed before the deadline, your case is still being processed and we will guide you through it. If you missed the deadline, we will assess your options for obtaining Danish citizenship through naturalisation.

Reacquisition of Danish citizenship

The scheme allowed you to regain Danish citizenship if you had previously been a Danish citizen and lost it under the old Danish citizenship law. You must not have been sentenced to a prison sentence since losing your citizenship. If you were over 22 years old when you lost your citizenship and were born abroad, you also had to have resided in Denmark for at least 3 months or a total of at least 1 year before turning 22.

To be covered by the scheme, you generally needed to meet these conditions:

  • You had to have been a Danish citizen in the past.
  • You had to have lost your citizenship because you applied for citizenship in another country before September 1, 2015.
  • You must not have been in prison since losing your citizenship.
  • You had to meet certain residency requirements if you were born abroad and were over 22 when you lost your citizenship.

Additional requirements applied if you had children:

  • Your children had to be under 18 and unmarried.
  • You had to have custody of your child.
  • Your children must not have been in prison.
  • If the child was adopted, the adoption had to be legally valid in Denmark.

Important things to remember:

  • Deadline: You could only apply to regain your Danish citizenship between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2026.
  • Documentation: Extensive documentation had to be submitted with the application.
  • Fee: There was a fee to apply.
  • Processing time: Pending cases still have long processing times.

This is a very brief explanation, and there may be more nuances and exceptions. It is therefore important that you check the information with the authorities or consult a lawyer.

Did I lose my Danish citizenship?

You likely lost your Danish citizenship if you applied for foreign citizenship before September 1, 2015. This is in accordance with the previously applicable § 7 of the Danish Citizenship Act. If you applied for foreign citizenship after that date, you have retained your Danish citizenship.

How can I get my Danish citizenship back?

During the five-year period from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2026, it was possible to regain Danish citizenship by submitting a written application to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. The scheme expired on June 30, 2026. If you submitted your application before the deadline, your case will still be processed - and we can advise you on your other routes to Danish citizenship.
