Key Requirements for Danish Citizenship

Based on information from the Danish Immigration Service. Each application is assessed individually - the list below is a summary, not a substitute for legal advice.

  • 1. Continuous Residence:

    • Standard requirement: Typically, you must have lived continuously in Denmark for nine years.
    • Exceptions: Refugees: Eight years of continuous residence.
    • Nordic citizens: Two years of continuous residence.
    • Spouses of Danish citizens: Six to eight years, depending on the duration of the marriage.
    • Minors: Those who arrived in Denmark before age 15 might qualify after 18 years if they've pursued Danish education.
    • Graduates from Danish institutions: Five years if they've completed a significant portion of their studies in Denmark.
  • 2. Self-sufficiency:

You must be able to support yourself financially without relying on public assistance.

  • 3. Employment:

You should have a stable employment or be enrolled in education.

  • 4. Danish language proficiency:

Demonstrated proficiency in Danish, typically through a recognized test.

  • 5. Knowledge of Denmark:

Understanding of Danish society, culture, and history. This is often assessed through the Indfødsretsprøven (Citizenship Test).

  • 6. Clean criminal record:

A history of law-abiding behavior is essential.

  • 7. Loyalty to Denmark:

You must swear allegiance to Denmark and its laws.

You must be able to support yourself and any dependents.

  • 9. No outstanding debts to the public.

  • 10. Participation in a municipal constitution ceremony.

Denmark: Dual citizenship

Since 1 September 2015 Denmark has allowed dual citizenship. You may hold Danish citizenship together with the citizenship of another country, provided the other country also permits it. If you obtained a foreign citizenship before 1 September 2015 and lost your Danish citizenship as a result, you may have been eligible for reacquisition - see below.

Reacquire Danish nationality

The reacquisition scheme for former Danish citizens who lost their citizenship when acquiring a foreign nationality was open from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2026 and has now closed. Applications submitted before the deadline are still being processed. If you missed the deadline, contact us and we will assess your remaining options.
